Drywall and insulation sheets: area counts are only a starting point
Dividing net area by sheet coverage gives a lower-level purchasing estimate. It does not decide how sheets will be arranged or whether an offcut is suitable for another position. Installation constraints can change the useful coverage.
A worked example
| Item | Example or check |
|---|---|
| Net surface | 31 m² |
| Illustrative allowance | 10% |
| Target | 34.1 m² |
| Sheet coverage | 2.88 m² |
| Area-based purchase | 12 sheets = 34.56 m² |
Check the assumptions
Draw the actual walls or ceiling and mark sheet orientation before ordering. Edges, joints, openings and support positions may require a different count. Insulation can also be sold in packs containing several pieces, so make sure the coverage input matches the purchase unit.
When comparing two products, keep the net area fixed and enter each product’s own sheet or pack coverage. A lower unit price is not enough to compare material cost if the coverages differ. Use the total purchased coverage and total price together.
Before using the estimate
An area calculator cannot choose fire performance, thermal performance, moisture control or fixing specifications. Follow the approved assembly and manufacturer requirements.
Open the Drywall Calculator and compare your measurements with the example.
