Concrete bag weight is not the same as concrete yield
A bag’s mass tells you how much material you carry. Yield tells you how much mixed concrete it produces. They are different quantities. A reliable bag count starts with the finished volume and the yield printed on the exact product.
A worked example
| Item | Example or check |
|---|---|
| Required mixed volume | 0.3 m³ |
| Illustrative product yield | 0.015 m³ per bag |
| Unrounded bags | 0.3 ÷ 0.015 = 20 |
| With 10% extra | 0.33 ÷ 0.015 = 22 bags |
Check the assumptions
The yield above is an example, not a product specification. Read the current package or manufacturer sheet. Two products of equal bag mass can have different yields, and approximate published yields may already be rounded.
Calculate the target volume first. Divide it by yield in the same volume unit, then round the final bag count up. If a result is 22.01 bags, a plan to buy 22 bags is short of the stated target. Do not add allowance again if it was already included in the target volume.
Before using the estimate
Cement is an ingredient, while a concrete mix includes aggregates. Do not substitute a bag of cement for a bag of ready-to-mix concrete in this arithmetic.
Open the Concrete Calculator and compare your measurements with the example.
